A cracked or fogged patio door panel does not mean a new patio door. In almost every case the glass comes out of the existing frame and new glass goes in, at a fraction of the cost and with none of the disruption.
The largest, heaviest and most regulated glass in the house
Door glass is not the same as window glass, and in Florida the rules around it are stricter than most people realise.
All glass in and beside a door has to be safety glazing. In practice that means tempered glass, which is heat-treated so that when it fails it breaks into small blunt fragments rather than shards. That is why a shattered patio door looks like a pile of gravel rather than a broken window, and why the whole panel goes at once rather than cracking.
In much of Florida there is a second layer of requirement. Wind-borne debris regions, and the high-velocity hurricane zone covering Miami-Dade and Broward, require openings to be protected — usually by laminated impact glass, which sandwiches a plastic interlayer between two panes so it holds together when struck. That glass is heavier, more expensive, and carries product approval documentation.
Both types are replaceable as a unit inside your existing frame. The frame, the rollers, the track and the hardware all stay. What matters is that whatever comes out is replaced by glass of the correct specification for that opening, rather than whatever is cheapest to source.

The most expensive pane in the house, and the most replaceable
Patio door glass is large, heavy and always safety-rated, which makes it the pane people assume cannot be dealt with on its own. It can. The panel comes out, the old glass is removed, and a new unit goes into the same frame.
There are two distinct problems people call about. One is breakage — an impact, a storm, or the sudden complete shatter that tempered glass does when it fails. The other is fogging, where a sealed unit has lost its perimeter seal and moisture is sitting between the panes.
Both are glass problems rather than door problems. And if your rollers or track are also worn, that is worth doing at the same visit, because the panel is already out and the labour is already paid for.

Storm and wind-borne debris
Hurricane season puts debris through glass every year, and patio doors present the largest target on most houses. Panels that survive visibly intact can still have taken a hit that compromises the seal.
Relentless solar load
A wall of glass facing west in Florida absorbs an enormous amount of heat every afternoon. That load works constantly on the perimeter seal of an insulated unit, which is why fogging so often appears on one elevation first.
Sprinkler etching and hard water
Irrigation overspray leaves mineral deposits that bake onto glass in Florida sun and eventually etch it permanently. Caught early it is a restoration; left for years it is a replacement.

Can you replace just the glass in my patio door?
Yes, and it is almost always the right approach. The frame, rollers and hardware stay; only the glass unit is renewed.
My patio door shattered into thousands of tiny pieces.
That is tempered glass behaving exactly as designed. It fails all at once into blunt fragments rather than shards, which is why it is required in doors. We clear it safely and reglaze the panel.
Do I need impact glass in the replacement?
If your opening is in a wind-borne debris region and was protected originally, then yes, and the replacement should carry the appropriate approval. We will tell you plainly which category you are in.
The glass is fogged but not broken. Worth fixing?
Usually yes. A fogged unit has lost its insulating value as well as its clarity, and on a large patio door that is a meaningful amount of cooling going out of the room.
Should I do the rollers at the same time?
If they are worn, yes. The panel has to come out for glass work anyway, so doing both together saves the labour of a second visit.
